Network Coverage & Availability

Coverage

Amazon Sidewalk is available in the United States, Canada and Mexico today. See https://coverage.sidewalk.amazon. European availability is planned for 2026.

Sidewalk is not yet available in the EU, but is planned for launch in 2026. We are actively working through a plan for EU and can provide a better timeline once we have line of sight against regulatory requirements

In the US, coverage can be assessed using Amazon's coverage map resources. See https://coverage.sidewalk.amazon. Outside the US, live testing is limited. Developers can find instructions here for setting up an Amazon Echo as a Sidewalk gateway in a non-US location.

Range varies by radio protocol. BLE offers shorter range (~10-50m), FSK mid-range (100-250m), and LoRa CSS (as supported by Semtech chips) provides the longest range (up to 2-5km). Actual performance depends on environment, obstacles, and gateway density.

Product Compatibility & Interoperability

Compatibility

Not natively. Sidewalk and LoRaWAN® are separate protocols. However, Semtech's chips support both, and dual-protocol devices can be designed to operate on both LoRaWAN and Sidewalk networks with appropriate firmware and certification.

Not directly — Sidewalk uses Amazon's own gateway infrastructure (primarily Ring and Echo devices). LoRaWAN gateways are separate infrastructure. Interoperability at the gateway level is not currently supported.

Semtech offers LoRa® chips with the RF capabilities for both protocols. Firmware must handle both stacks, and the device must be certified separately for each protocol. Semtech and Amazon Sidewalk can provide technical guidance on dual-protocol development.

Product SKUs may be hardware-identical but require region-specific firmware configuration. Auto-roaming between regions is not confirmed. Check with Semtech and Sidewalk teams for specific SKU guidance.

Device Development & Certification

Certification

There is no “Sidewalk developer program” to join or stack to implement. All the required tools, sample apps and SDKs are available from silicon partners listed  here.

Yes, OEM pre-provisioning is supported through a model similar to Tricity/manufacturing provisioning. This allows devices to be registered and associated before reaching the end customer. Contact Sidewalk team for details on the manufacturing provisioning process.

Sidewalk implements a layered security architecture including device authentication, end-to-end encryption, and key management. Supported security models include certificate-based identity and secure element integration. Refer here for more detail

This depends on the radio mode (BLE, FSK, LoRa CSS). Semtech radio supports both the LoRa CSS mode for low data rates (~2kbps) with excellent range and low power and the mid-range FSK mode for medium data rates (50kbps).

BLE offers higher data rates (1Mbps) at shorter range. Sidewalk optimizes for IoT use cases; real-time or high-throughput applications are not the primary target.

Use Cases & Applications

Use Cases

Key use cases include asset tracking (e.g., Littlebird child tracker, vehicle tracking/car alarms), smart home sensors, environmental monitoring, agriculture, industrial IoT, and smart cities. Semtech's LoRa Edge™ chips also enable low power indoor and outdoor location-based features without a dedicated GPS module.

Yes. Semtech's LoRa Edge™ chips include integrated GNSS and Wi-Fi scanning for cloud-based geolocation. Combined with Sidewalk's network BLE triangulation, this enables low-power asset tracking without a dedicated GPS module.

Sidewalk integrates with AWS IoT Core, enabling device data to flow into the broader AWS ecosystem (Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, etc.). This allows developers to build scalable IoT applications on top of the Sidewalk network.
